Use your own AI key

On Pro and Agency, add your own Anthropic or OpenAI API key in your account. AI work on your websites then runs on your key and uses no credits: the company bills you for it directly.

How it works#

Your plan’s price and monthly credits stay the same. With your own key, AI work for your websites runs on your account at Anthropic or OpenAI instead of ours: it uses no credits, and the company bills you at its own prices. Work on a company you have no key for uses credits as before.

Your keyWhat runs on it
AnthropicClaude models, the default AI: the assistant, Design mode, creating websites, site-wide changes, the code assistant, SEO and content writing, translations, courses, report summaries and AI steps in automations
OpenAIGPT models, when you choose one, and AI images

Add your key#

  1. Get an API keyFrom your Anthropic Console or your OpenAI account, with billing set up there.
  2. Open your accountIn your account, find Your own AI keys and open Add a key.
  3. Choose the company and the websitesAll my websites, or one website (an agency’s client who pays for their own AI, for example). A website’s own key is used before the account’s.
  4. Check and saveWe check the key with the company (that costs nothing) before saving it.

From then on the builder’s model menu shows Your key next to the models that run on it, and a finished request says On your own key instead of a number of credits. Your account’s activity shows each request with what it cost on your key.

When your key doesn’t work#

The message saysWhat to do
Anthropic (or OpenAI) didn’t accept your own API keyThe key was deleted or mistyped: add it again, or pause it to use credits.
Your Anthropic account is out of credit for your own API keyAdd credit at the company, or pause the key to use credits.
Your Anthropic API key hit its rate limitWait a minute and try again. New accounts at Anthropic and OpenAI have low limits that a whole-website build can reach; they rise as you use them.

Your key stays private#

  • You enter it on your account page only, never in WordPress: nobody with access to your websites can read it.
  • It’s stored encrypted, and only its last four characters are ever shown again.
  • It’s never sent to WordPress, to the browser or to the AI. Remove deletes it at once, and it’s deleted with your account.

If your plan ends or changes to one without own keys, your keys are kept but not used, and AI uses credits again.
